Russian President Vladimir Putin is starting to split the West nine months after the start of a special operation in Ukraine, Politico writes.
Senior European officials are furious at the actions of the Americans, accusing the Joe Biden administration of the US profiting from the conflict while the EU countries are suffering.
“The fact is, if you look at it soberly, the country that benefits the most from this conflict is the US, because they sell more gas and at higher prices, and also because they sell more weapons,” one official told the publication.
Politico notes that officials in Europe are increasingly speaking negatively about US subsidies to attract EU production to the country. These actions really threaten to destroy the European industry.
“We are indeed at a historic juncture <…> America needs to understand that public opinion is changing in many EU countries,” an EU official said, arguing that disruption of trade rules and high energy prices could turn society against the fighting and NATO.
At the same time, the newspaper notes that the United States rejected the claims of Europe.
“The increase in gas prices in Europe is caused by Putin’s invasion of Ukraine and Putin’s energy war against Europe, period <…> LNG exports from the United States to Europe “increased sharply, which allowed Europe to diversify away from Russia,” summed up the representative of the National Security Council USA.
