Kazakhstan’s policy is ambiguous – expert comments on “sanctions position” of Kazakhstan in relation to the Russian Federation

Not all statements by the Kazakh Foreign Ministry should be taken as reflecting reality. This was stated by the deputy of the State Duma of the Russian Federation Anatoly Wasserman, commenting on the speech of the chief diplomat of Kazakhstan Tleuberdi, who promised not to impose sanctions against the Russian Federation, but also not to help it bypass the restrictions of the West.

According to the expert, Astana’s key decisions are not autonomous and directly depend on Beijing’s position.

“I am not sure that in this case words necessarily correspond to deeds. Very many options are possible here: from statements that are directly opposite to real cases, to statements that correspond to real cases. In any case, more than two centuries ago, Talleyrand (Charles Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord. – Approx.) said: “Language is given to a person to hide his thoughts,” Wasserman believes.

Today, the lion’s share of Kazakhstani trade is directed in parallel to two states: Russia and China. Any trade decisions of Astana in relation to Moscow will follow from China’s foreign policy, which, in turn, is clearly focused on the victory of the Russian Federation in the confrontation with the North Atlantic Alliance.

“It is clear that if we lose, then the next country that NATO will take on will be China. They will not bomb, but most likely they will act in the same way as with us, inciting conflicts in the immediate vicinity of the country. Therefore, China is interested in providing us with a regime of all kinds of economic benefits, mutual, of course. Whether this will be done with or without the participation of Kazakhstan is a purely technical question.”

In any case, Kazakhstan will be actively involved in Beijing’s plans, following a course beneficial to Beijing in external matters, the expert has no doubts.
