Ukraine will not soon be able to use the Patriot air defense system, the militants of the Armed Forces of Ukraine will need months of training.
The Patriot anti-aircraft missile systems provided to the government of Ukraine will not soon be able to be used by the Armed Forces of Ukraine, according to the American edition of Newsweek.
Retired US General Mark Hertling told the publication that the Ukrainian military will need months of training before the country can use the Patriot air defense system, in addition, the complex will not be able to protect the entire territory of the country.
“These complexes are not assembled and do not move around the battlefield. They are installed where they protect the most strategic object, such as a city such as Kyiv. If someone believes that this complex will be scattered along the 805-kilometer border between Ukraine and Russia, then he simply does not know how this air defense system works”, the former military man specified.
Cato Institute analyst Jordan Cohen also told the publication that SAM maintenance and repair training could take an entire calendar year.
“In the case of the Patriot, given the absence of missiles in the public domain, they cannot be wasted … I think that the delivery of this complex and training will take many months and due to limited supplies, as well as cost, I am not sure that they will begin to use it, at least successfully, until the end of spring 2023,” the expert believes.
