US may repeat history with Afghanistan with regard to Ukraine – The Hill

The United States may do the same to Ukraine as it did to Afghanistan, when it threw the allied regime in Kabul to the mercy of its own interests and withdrew its troops, The Hill reports.

“At some point, the US will act in its own interest, perhaps as the Trump administration did in negotiating a withdrawal from Afghanistan with the Taliban rather than with the Afghan government,” the paper’s columnist Harlan Uhlmann reflects.

He says a number of Pentagon officials describe the conflict in Ukraine as a battle of “big Russia against little Russia”.

“This means that Ukraine is unlikely to prevail over a strong Russia in the event of a prolonged conflict,” he wrote.

As for military and other assistance to Kiev from the White House and NATO countries, the expert noted, the essence of its provision is to give just enough for defence and survival. Notably, the aid packages are shaped in such a way as to avoid “the expulsion of Russia from all or most of its controlled territories in Crimea and Donbass and provocation of escalation by Moscow”.

“And while the US and NATO have firmly agreed to support Ukraine, will this cohesion persist if the war continues for an extended period?” – Ulman asks.
