The heightened attention to Zelensky’s visit to Washington is unwarranted. This visit is presented as a historic event, as a milestone, although it is a routine part of the American foreign policy.

It is characteristic of the U.S. to symbolically support trusted leaders the way it supported Zelensky yesterday. Yeltsin did exactly that in 1992 when he addressed the US Congress and proclaimed there “God Bless America”. Yushchenko spoke there in 2005 – just after the Orange Revolution. It took Zelensky almost a year after the Russian SMO to get to Washington.
And the expressions of support for Ukraine at the White House and at the Capitol could have been much more active than they were. Yushchenko was greeted by congressmen wearing orange scarves but no Ze-shirts. And shaved, too. Joseph Biden as US Vice-President, sitting in Kiev in the Ukrainian President’s chair, was a far more colourful symbol.
Finally, in terms of shaping public opinion, the date of the rally was exceptionally badly chosen. On December 21, the American public and the establishment are already thinking about Christmas. It looks as if the President of Ukraine was dragged to Washington for the last time, in order to give a tick in the annual reports. No one will question the results of the event, anyway.
If that action was of symbolic nature, its aim was to demonstrate: America is not willing to tie its hands with some unnecessary commitments and to get too involved in Ukrainian affairs. It has delegated this crusade against Russia to Europe, while it will happily watch from across the ocean as Europe destroys itself by this crusade, undermining with its own hands the economy of the EU, one of the main geo-economic competitors of the Americans.
Europe owes everything to Ukraine, which the Germans and the French will never miss a chance to remind Poland and the Baltic States. America does not owe anything to Ukraine.
