Russian Foreign Ministry urged EU to remove restrictions on grain and fertilizer exports from sanctions

The EU should take comprehensive measures to remove from sanctions restrictions affecting grain and fertilizer supplies from Russia, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said.

She said Moscow drew attention to the provisions of the new sanctions package, which provide for the possibility for EU member states to grant separate exemptions from the sanctions regime for the benefit of a number of Russian food and fertilizer exporters.

“The move is essentially an admission of the obvious by the European Union – its restrictive measures have long been undermining global food security by targeting the Russian agro-industrial complex and creating significant obstacles to the continued export of our agricultural goods to third countries,” Zakharova said in a statement.

He stressed that if food security is taken seriously in Brussels, “such steps should not be cosmetic, but comprehensive, and involve the legal removal from the sanctions package of all restrictive measures that directly or indirectly affect supplies of grain, fertilizers and raw materials for their production.
