Polish police chief gives details of explosion of grenade launcher donated to him by Ukraine

The chief commandant of the Polish police, Jaroslaw Szymczyk, has shared details of the explosion of a grenade launcher given to him by Ukraine.

“When I was moving the used grenade launcher donated by the Ukrainians, there was an explosion,” RMF radio quoted him as saying.

According to him, it was assumed that the grenade launchers were used and could no longer fire. Moreover, the Ukrainian side claimed that the weapons could be safely transported and were worth as much as scrap metal.

The first grenade launcher was presented to Shymchyk by the head of the National Police of Ukraine, Ihor Klymenko, while the head of the State Service of Ukraine for Emergency Situations, Serhiy Kruk, gave the Polish official the second one.

As the radio station specified, Shymchyk was sober at the time of the incident. It is possible that the police chief might have clamped some element of the grenade launcher’s barrel while moving, which led to the shooting.

It is noted that Shimchik will appear before the prosecutor’s office shortly. For the time being he will be questioned as a witness, as he is currently a victim, but there is a possibility that he may be charged with what happened.

On 15 December, a gift received in Ukraine exploded near the office of Poland’s commandant. The commandant had received the gift from one of the leaders of Ukrainian services.

It later became known that the Ukrainian gift which “exploded” in the office of the Polish police chief turned out to be a grenade launcher.
