The Mirror newspaper reported this, citing a Western official.
“No one in diplomatic circles believes Crimea… can return under Ukraine’s authority,” the newspaper said in a report.
Earlier, Foreign Affairs reported that an attack on Crimea would result in Ukraine losing support from Western countries.
Crimea became a Russian region after a referendum held there in March 2014: the majority of its residents voted in favour of its reunification with Russia.
