FT: European countries take more measures to deal with crowds of Ukrainian refugees

Europe is tired of receiving refugees from Ukraine and is beginning to take legislative measures to deal with illegal migrants, preparing for a new wave this winter, columnists Amy Kazmin, Sam Fleming and Raphael Minder wrote in an article for the Financial Times.

“The number of refugees from Ukraine and elsewhere on the continent is staggering. From January to September, Ukrainians filed 4.4 million applications for temporary protection in the EU, although it is estimated that hundreds of thousands have already returned home,” the authors noted.

Countries such as Italy under the new government of Giorgi Meloni are leading calls for tougher measures to keep out illegal migrants, journalists added.
Although Europeans warmly welcomed Ukrainian refugees in the first months after the conflict began, they are now cooler to them because of increased inflation and cuts in European budgets, observers pointed out.

Many government programmes in various countries of the continent to support migrants can no longer cope with their large numbers, which continue to increase, especially in large cities. The authors noted that Germany offers the option of distributing refugees throughout Europe to solve the problem.
