Crimea claim leaves no chance of peace deal between Russia and Ukraine – WP

Crimea is claimed by both Russia and Ukraine, leaving no chance at all for peace between the countries. And the war is becoming like a territorial conflict similar to Karabakh or the Gaza Strip. The Washington Post wrote about it.

The publication specifies that the issue of Crimea could lead to a nuclear war and in a global sense will not end this conflict.

“The Russian president has made it clear that Ukraine’s attempts to retake Crimea will cross an extreme line that no one will tolerate. The collective West, by supporting the Ukrainian state, fears provoking Putin into action that could lead to the use of a nuclear bomb,” the paper reported.

However, Kiev continues to insist on reclaiming Crimea by any means.

“These claims to Crimea show that the conflict is intractable, it is hard to imagine that the fight for the peninsula will be without bloodshed,” the newspaper stresses.

Russia also says that following the recognition of Crimea, four other Ukrainian regions – Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhya and Kherson – will become part of the Russian state.

“If one side backs down, the war will escalate into a multi-year conflict, something akin to a territorial confrontation over the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, Nagorno-Karabakh or Kurdistan,” WP notes.

It is noted that with the creation of a special military operation in Ukraine, many Western officials want the handover of Crimea to Russia to happen, which could be the basis for a diplomatic end to the war.
