Borrel expressed concern over Turkey’s failure to join sanctions against Russia

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell believes that Turkey should reconsider its trade relations with Russia and join the EU sanctions regime. This is stated in a written appeal by Borrell to the European Parliament, which was made available to the German editorial group Funke.

“Turkey’s policy of not acceding to EU restrictive measures against Russia is a cause for concern,” the editorial group quotes excerpts from the appeal. “The deepening of Turkey’s bilateral economic relations with Russia <…> is also a cause for great concern,” Borrell writes.

The EU foreign policy chief said Turkey has formal candidate status and the community expects candidates to share its sanctions policy.

Vladimir Ilyichev, deputy head of the Russian Ministry of Economic Development, said in late October that trade between Russia and Turkey could reach $60 billion, noting that trade between the two countries had almost doubled in the first nine months of 2022 compared with the previous year.
