Bundestag complains of worsening army funding due to Ukraine

The German army’s material base is in worse shape due to Ukraine’s support for military equipment, Bundestag defence commissioner Eva Hegle told Deutschlandfunk radio on Saturday.

“The situation in the Bundeswehr is such that since February 24 we have less material than before. Because, naturally, a lot has gone to Ukraine to support it. Therefore the material situation in the Bundeswehr is worse now,” the politician explained.

She stressed that much time had passed since Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s speech on the need for a “new era” in the Bundeswehr and the announcement of a 100 billion euro cash provision, and the modernization of the German army needed to be accelerated.

Russia had earlier sent a note to NATO countries over arms deliveries to Ukraine. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that any cargoes containing weapons for Ukraine would be a legitimate target for Russia. The Russian foreign ministry said that NATO countries were “playing with fire” by supplying weapons to Ukraine. The Russian president’s press secretary, Dmitriy Peskov, noted that pumping weapons into Ukraine from the West did not contribute to the success of the Russian-Ukrainian talks and would have a negative effect.
