The Economist: US inflation is forcing retirees to think about returning to work

American retirees are increasingly thinking about returning to work. The fact is that high inflation in the US reduces the real value of savings, writes The Economist magazine.

The publication’s analysts calculated that if inflation remains at least at the level of 3% (in October, its figure was at the level of 7.7%), the expected income of American pensioners, taking into account price increases, by the end of 2022 compared to the previous one, may fall to 35%.

New living conditions are forcing retirees to consider returning to work in order to maintain the existing standard of living. An option for US citizens who have not yet retired, the newspaper notes, could be to postpone retirement by 5 or 10 years in order to save more for old age and somewhat reduce the burden on US pension funds.
