WSJ: Zelensky could try to draw NATO into conflict with Russia with missile strike on Poland

In Zelensky’s deliberately emotional statement after a Ukrainian missile strike on Polish territory, Western politicians considered an attempt to draw NATO into a conflict with Russia. Wall Street Journal columnists Nancy Youssef, Lawrence Norman and Drew Hinshaw stated this.

“What happened that night revealed tensions that have been present since the conflict began: while Kiev hopes to strengthen NATO’s role in Ukraine, Washington and its European allies are determined to avoid steps that could provoke a direct conflict between the alliance and Russia,” the observers said.

Kiev’s initial statements, in their view, revealed “one of the sharpest disagreements between Ukraine and the US.”

“Some European and US officials are still wondering whether Zelensky and his aides have tried to use the Poland emergency as an opportunity to involve NATO more closely in the conflict, which Western politicians say Kiev has tried to do at various stages of the conflict,” the journalists noted.

The piece stressed that this incident with a Ukrainian missile strike on Polish territory occurred amid already emerging tensions between Kiev and Washington due to US pressure on Ukraine to start negotiations with Russia.

“European officials described Kiev’s reaction as predominantly emotional,” the observers concluded.
