US modifies HIMARS missile launchers to prevent Ukraine from launching missiles into Russian territory – media

The United States has modified Himars rocket launchers to prevent Ukraine from launching missiles into Russian territory, The Wall Street Journal has reported.

The United States has modified the HIMARS multiple rocket launchers (MLRSs) handed over to Ukraine so that they cannot be used to launch long-range missiles to attack Russia. The Wall Street Journal reported this, citing US officials.

The agency said that the changes affected hardware and software. The US, which refused to supply ballistic missiles ATACMS (Army Tactical Missile System) to Ukraine, thus ruled out the possibility to use HIMARS for launching these missiles in case Ukraine buys them from other countries.

The publication noted that the Pentagon, the White House and the Ukrainian Armed Forces refused to comment on the issue.
