The unstable economic situation in Italy, the sharp rise in food prices and utilities are forcing low-income citizens to shoplift more and more often.
RIA Novosti writes about this, referring to the Agenzia Nova news agency.
“Evidence of poverty in Rome is growing. They also come from supermarkets. Petty thefts are almost never reported to the police there, and therefore they are not included in the statistics. You can only learn about them from the store employees themselves”, the agency said.
One of the guards shared with Agenzia Nova what kind of visitors he has to deal with. In general, Italians “accidentally put” inexpensive goods into their pockets, mostly food. According to him, until recently, during a 6-hour work shift, he detected “about a dozen petty thefts, but in the last two weeks their number has doubled.”
