Medvedev says Russia without nuclear weapons would be tried to “tear itself apart”

Russia could have been “torn apart” if not for the strategic nuclear capabilities that keep hotheads at bay. Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, said this.

“If it were not for the strategic nuclear arsenal, we would be torn apart. That, I think, is obvious to all of you. It’s a huge rich country and everyone is looking and thinking how they can take something away or divide it into pieces and then quietly appropriate it all,” he said.

At the same time Russia is in favor of non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, Medvedev stressed.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously noted that the United States is the only country in the world that has used nuclear weapons, thus setting a precedent.

At the same time, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that the Russian side was forced to regularly send warning signals to the United States and NATO that a direct clash of nuclear powers was unacceptable.
