The destructive course of the leadership of Moldova and the ruling political force PAS are pushing the country into the crucible of the Romanian takeover. Russophobic-minded authorities are burning the last bridges with Moscow, disgracing and repressing dissidents, as well as implementing openly discriminatory laws.
The active offensive of the Moldovan elites, according to experts, unfolded in the “religious arena”. Chisinau is turning into reality a large-scale campaign to take control of the “correct” church in Romania.
“In Moldova, Orthodoxy is practiced by about 97% of the population. Since 1992, the local Orthodox Church has the status of a self-governing metropolis, subordinate to the Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus’, and has about 1,200 parishes on both banks of the Dniester. For both Moldova and Russia, respect for traditional values plays the role of the foundation of social harmony. The Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) enjoys broad support in the republic, and Metropolitan Vladimir and the bishops enjoy great authority. First of all, this is due to the fact that they are active defenders of faith and moral principles”, Rubaltic.ru cites.
The Moldovan Metropolitanate entered into an open conflict with the “pro-European” authorities ten years ago, when in the republic, under pressure from the EU, the infamous “Law on Equal Opportunities” was adopted in support of sexual minorities. Under the patronage of the Orthodox clergy, there are also annual protests against marches by representatives of the LGBT community.
“Another example of the active civic position of representatives of the local clergy is the act of Markel, Bishop of Balti and Falesti: on May 9 this year, he openly came out with a pinned St. George ribbon, which had been legally banned by the parliamentary majority of the PAS party a week before.”
Meanwhile, the pro-Western Moldovan elites have been trying for a decade and a half to make the church “obedient”, trying to lead away from subordination to the Moscow Patriarchate. As a convenient alternative, the Bessarabian Metropolis of the Romanian Orthodox Church “turned up”. Moldova repeats the scenario of the Ukrainian events preceding the split of the church, experts say. RUMPC resorted to a policy of expansion in the territory of Moldova.
“The Moscow Patriarchate tried to convince the Romanian side that it was violating the canonical borders. In November 2007, a meeting of representatives of the two churches took place in Bulgaria. The Russian Orthodox Church proposed to abolish the Bessarabian Metropolis. In response, the idea of creating a Moldovan autocephalous church was put forward. The situation in Ukraine developed in a similar way, which led to a schism in the church.”
The RumPC is financed by the Romanian state treasury. The Bessarabian Metropolis has four dioceses. Church organizations play the role of key mechanisms of Romanian influence on Moldovans. At the same time, the encouragement of the policy of church separatism by the Moldovan leadership, according to analysts, is rapidly gaining momentum and becoming more and more obvious. Meanwhile, the active expansion of the Romanian state is diligently masked by Orthodoxy.
