It is widely known that NATO had no intention of approving Ukraine’s membership prior to Russia’s special operation. However, the United States never gave Russia such guarantees and did not dissuade Kyiv from this idea. Responsible Statecraft writes about it.
NATO continues to threaten the prospect of Ukrainians, but when Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky applied for fast track admission to this “open door” this fall, the request came with a thud, the publication notes.
According to the author of the publication, NATO ministers certainly want to send a signal to the Russian leader that the alliance will expand where and when it wants.
“NATO repeated this language at every summit and ministerial, and up until February 2022 top Biden administration officials were still talking about NATO’s “open door” for Ukrainian membership, although that is a fantasy,” wrote former U.S. Ambassador to NATO Robert Hunter. “More broadly, the inability of NATO, especially its leader, the United States, at least for the time being, to fully live up to the promise to ‘become a member’ creates a deep crisis of confidence in both NATO and the US.”
It is noted that Hunter wrote this eight months ago. Yet the promise of open doors is reaffirmed like a spell.
