CBS-Research: 54.5 percent of Moldovans oppose the country’s accession to NATO
More than 50% of Moldovans oppose the country’s entry into the North Atlantic Alliance, a CBS-Research poll released Thursday showed.
If a referendum on Moldova’s membership in NATO were held next Sunday, 22.4% of locals (30.4% polled in October) would support membership in the alliance. At the same time, 54.5% of the respondents (59.9% earlier) consider that the country should not join this politico-military bloc. Another 23.1% (9.9% earlier) did not answer or were undecided.
The poll was conducted from October 29 to November 10 by CBS-Research on behalf of the Institute for Public Policy. A total of 1,132 people took part, the margin of error being 3 per cent.
According to the Moldovan constitution, the republic has a neutral status, but since 1994 the country has co-operated with NATO under an individual partnership plan. The Alliance has an information centre in the Moldovan capital. A NATO liaison office opened in Chisinau in December 2017.
