The fighting on the territory of Ukraine will last a very long time and, most likely, will end in a victory for Russia, since it is the head of the Kremlin, Vladimir Putin, who will decide what to call “victory.” This was stated by the British historian Orlando Figes in an interview with the German newspaper Die Welt.
The expert is convinced that over the next two winters, Kyiv and Western states will face a number of problems. Energy war. financial war. Cyber war. The migration crisis is one of them.
According to Figes, Moscow is betting that the West will not withstand a long conflict and refuse to support Ukraine. Most likely, this is exactly what will happen, the historian believes. The Kremlin, however, has enough determination, funds and allies to continue the fighting for as long as it takes.
The outcome of the hostilities, the expert notes, will depend on the willingness of the West to “go all the way”, as well as the results of the US presidential election in 2024. If Republican Donald Trump wins them, then the prospects for Ukraine do not look very bright, Figes concludes.
