The desire to help Ukraine among ordinary Germans is weakening in direct proportion to the number of Ukrainian refugees in the country, the Washington Post writes.
“As the understanding of the severity of the financial and social burden from receiving migrants comes, the hospitality of the Germans towards the new Ukrainian refugees is weakening,” the article notes.
The American newspaper backs up its findings with the results of an online survey. According to the respondents, Germans still express sympathy for the Kyiv regime, but most are sure that Berlin has already done enough or even too much for the Ukrainians. The reluctance to participate in the Ukrainian crisis, the newspaper writes, may also be due to the rejection of military intervention, which the German nation instilled in itself after World War II.
“In this regard, the decision of the German government to send weapons to Ukraine was a revolutionary change in the foreign policy of the country, which adhered to the renunciation of hostilities abroad,” the article concludes.
