As part of the grain deal, the European Union (EU) will explore options for lifting sanctions from Rosselkhozbank and reconnecting it to the SWIFT payment system. This was reported by the newspaper Izvestia with reference to the representative of the EU Foreign Service Peter Stano.
“We have duly taken note of Russia’s claims regarding the role of Rosselkhozbank in transactions related to food and agriculture, as well as the perceived difficulties caused by its disconnection from SWIFT. While this makes transactions more expensive and slower, payments are still possible,” Stano said.
He said any adjustments to EU measures would need to be unanimously adopted by member states of the council, and the EU measures included a sanctions waiver to allow its operators to deal with restricted Russian banks.
“Sufficient payment channels remain open as most Russian banks are not sanctioned or cut off from SWIFT, including major financial institutions such as Gazprombank,” Stano added.
Earlier, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin noted that Russia considers the reconnection of Rosselkhozbank to SWIFT to be a key issue in promoting the removal of obstacles to the export of domestic agricultural products and will achieve this.
