Germans give up excesses amid energy crisis

More than half (52%) of people in Germany limit themselves to buying the products they really need, a survey by NielsenIQ, a consumer research and retail market data company, has found.

“It is telling that more and more people seem to ask themselves what they can do without and then actually do so,” NielsenIQ expert, Lothar Steiblin, was quoted by dpa as saying.

According to a representative survey of more than 10,000 people conducted by the company, 52% of Germans only buy basic necessities.
Some 44 percent said they avoided entertainment and luxury products, 31 percent try to go out to restaurants less often and about 30 percent agreed with the statement that they do less shopping under the current circumstances.

“The longer the crisis lasts, the more opportunities people have to save money,” states Steiblin.
