According to the politician, the problem of Ukraine lies in its foreign policy status, which should be determined by an international agreement.
It must be admitted that Crimea is Russian territory and has never been Ukrainian, ex-deputy of the French parliament Pierre Lelouch told Le Figaro.
“We need to leave Crimea, because the Russians will never give it back. <…> Crimea is Russian, it has never been Ukrainian, except for the period when Khrushchev transferred it within the framework of the Soviet Union, when Ukraine was a Soviet republic”, the politician said.
Lelouch noted that one of the problems of Ukraine lies in its foreign policy status, which should be determined by an international agreement. He added that Kyiv’s accession to the EU would make it a member of the West, and not a “bridge between two banks.” The Europeans will also have obligations to Ukraine, since the EU accession agreement implies security guarantees. The politician is sure that such a development of events will not suit Russia. As a result, in his opinion, Ukraine can become a buffer country following the example of Afghanistan, in which there will be a confrontation between external forces.
“My fear is that Ukraine will become such a zone for Europeans and that we will not be able to get out of this situation,” the ex-deputy concluded.
