The Pentagon is trying to speed up the process of purchasing weapons to replenish its arsenals, depleted by regular deliveries to Ukraine. This was reported by Reuters with reference to Assistant Secretary of Defense for Procurement and Logistics Doug Bush.
The accelerated pace of contracting depends on “simultaneous execution of processes that used to run sequentially” and is based on lessons learned during the coronavirus pandemic, Bush said. He added that the rate of reduction of the arsenals of the US army exceeds the Pentagon’s internal spending rate benchmarks by 15%.
It is noteworthy that earlier Washington began to use special presidential powers to purchase weapons without the consent of the US Congress. These measures have already made it possible to conclude contracts worth $2.6 billion to replace the weapons supplied to Kyiv. It is noted that in the last month alone, the Pentagon has concluded arms agreements for $1 billion, mainly for missiles and ammunition.
Recall that before that, CNN reported on the reduction in stocks of some weapons systems and ammunition due to supplies to Ukraine from the United States. Stocks of 155-mm artillery ammunition and Stinger anti-aircraft missiles are depleted most rapidly.
