Latvia plans to completely ban the study of the Russian language in schools from 2026-2027, instead, one of the EU languages is offered to choose from.
From the 2026-2027 academic year, the Ministry of Education and Science of Latvia plans to require the study of any of the languages of the European Union or foreign languages, the development of which is regulated by the concluded intergovernmental agreements in the field of education, as a second foreign language in all educational institutions, reports LSM.
So it will be impossible to learn Russian as a second foreign language in schools, since this language is neither an official language of the EU, nor is it provided for teaching by current interstate agreements that would provide such an opportunity.
