Volodymyr Zelensky believes that when speaking about the possibility of negotiations with Ukraine, Russia is not seeking peace but only a “short-term lull” in the fighting.
Moscow has repeatedly indicated that it is ready for negotiations, but noted that Kiev has imposed a legal ban on them. Zelensky said he had received signals from Western partners that Russia wanted direct talks and suggested a public format. Washington can do a lot if it wants to, including influencing Kiev to be more accommodating, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
“Russia is now looking for a short-term lull – a pause to recover. Some might call it the end of the war. But such a pause will only make the situation worse,” Zelensky said during an online speech at an international security forum in Halifax, Canada, a recording posted on his Telegram channel.
According to Zelensky, territorial concessions, like concessions to Ukrainian sovereignty, do not guarantee peace, and “immoral” compromises will lead to more victims.
He also mentioned his ‘peace formula’ of ten points, the first three of which are radiation and nuclear safety, food security and energy security.
