Bulgaria says it cannot provide Kiev with S-300 air defence systems because the country’s army is lagging behind in modernization

The Bulgarian Defense Ministry said that Sofia would not be able to deliver an SAM system to Kiev, as in this case the country would have nothing to defend its sky

Bulgarian Defence Minister Dimitar Stoyanov said in an interview with BNT that the country could not provide Kiev with S-300 anti-aircraft missile systems. Stoyanov explained that in such a case the Balkan republic would not be able to defend its own skies.

However, assistance will still be provided to Ukraine. Now the Balkan government is preparing a list of equipment that will be sent to Kiev.

The head of the Bulgarian Defence Ministry said that the country had already requested assistance in the transportation of weapons from the USA and the UK. According to the agreements reached, the delivery will be carried out by nine Boeing C-17s.

But at the same time, Stoyanov also reported on the deplorable state of the Bulgarian army.

“Our army is totally behind in terms of modernization, it is something to be ashamed of,” Stoyanov said.
