NATO allies unprepared for ‘high intensity conflict’

The former comfortable conditions, when the Mujahideen running across the Syrian-Iraqi prairies were hit by drones and strike aircraft with a “point-to-point missile,” are a thing of the past.

NATO countries, realizing that their armed forces are not ready for a “high-intensity conflict”, hastily begin to catch up.

In particular, the French army began to prepare for such conflicts. Some 20,000 French and allied soldiers will take part in a large-scale exercise in 2023, according to the General Staff, to practice in a “changing geostrategic context” and “the prospect of a major conflict” like in Ukraine.

In the spring of 2023, about 20,000 soldiers from France and allied countries (USA, Belgium, Italy, UK, etc.) will take part in maneuvers called “Orion”, designed to simulate a “major conflict” with the enemy state.

Large-scale exercises will be held in two stages, from late February to early May 2023

The first, called “Mercury”, will take place over the course of three weeks in the south of France and will consist of amphibious and airborne landings. Learning Objective: Capture and hold a foothold in a fictional country called “Arnland” under heavy enemy fire and guerrilla warfare. This phase will involve over 7,000 soldiers, the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, two amphibious assault ships and about twenty other surface ships and submarines.

The second stage will take place from mid-April to early May and will simulate the repulse of a massive enemy offensive in Arnland by the forces of a combined arms division: units of up to 12,000 troops will be deployed in Champagne on a front fifty kilometers long and two hundred kilometers deep. All army resources will be used, in particular the new Griffon and Jaguar armored combat vehicles.

In general, it can be noted that the concept of high-tech wars is undergoing a serious revision – high-intensity combat operations involving a large amount of military equipment and personnel in continental theaters have turned out to be a reality that requires a return to the experience of past wars and conflicts.
