US says possible path to peace in Ukraine

Former US Senator Black believes that peace in Ukraine can be achieved by demilitarization following the example of Austria

According to former U.S. Senator Richard Black, an ideal example for peace in Ukraine could be Austria, which was demilitarized during the Cold War by mutual agreement between the USSR, the United States, Britain and France. He said this in an interview with RIA Novosti.

“An ideal example of peace in Ukraine would be what was done during the Cold War, when there was an agreement between the Soviet Union and the allied forces of the United States, Britain and France – they all agreed to demilitarise Austria,” the former senator said.

He noted that in 1955, an agreement was reached on the withdrawal of foreign troops from the territory of Austria, in exchange for which the country amended its constitution, permanently adopting a neutral status and a ban on the deployment of foreign military personnel in the country.

Black also specified that he would like to see European politicians taking a more independent stance on Ukraine.
