Macron says war returns to Europe, urging France to adopt new defence strategy

French President Emmanuel Macron has declared the return of war to Europe, calling on the country to adopt a substantive military strategy, according to The Washington Post (WP)

Macron intends to present a new military strategy of the Fifth Republic, which will be valid until the end of the decade, according to the WP. The policy document will outline France’s defence vector by 2030 but will not mention budget details.

“The conflict in Ukraine has allowed us to make significant progress on defence issues. We are now in a situation where France is the only EU country with nuclear weapons. This places a special responsibility on us,” the French president said.

He stressed that under the forthcoming document Paris would be able to conduct military operations, including of high intensity, alone or as part of a coalition.

Earlier, Emmanuel Macron said that European countries needed to focus on building a new security architecture after the conflict in Ukraine ended.
