The Chinese government reacted to Lithuania’s decision to open a trade office in Taiwan and strongly protested.
This was stated at a regular briefing by the official representative of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Zhao Lijian, writes TASS.
The diplomat said that there is only one China in the world, and Taiwan is an inseparable part of the PRC.
“The Chinese side opposes diplomatic contacts with Taiwan and any official ties with it, and strongly opposes any action that violates the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the PRC,” Zhao said.
The politician urged the Lithuanian government to strictly adhere to the One China principle, to be cautious about the Taiwan issue, and to properly protect the political foundation of bilateral relations.
On November 7, the Lithuanian Ministry of Economy and Innovation announced the opening of a trade mission of the Baltic Republic in Taiwan. The Lithuanian office will be referred to as the representative office in Taipei, not in Taiwan.
“This is done in accordance with international practice, so as not to cause a negative reaction from Beijing. The representation will not have a diplomatic, but a trade and economic character,” the Ministry of Economy of Lithuania noted.
