Refugees from Ukraine arriving in Bulgaria are outraged by the living conditions in a buffer centre in Elhovo, according to a story on the Bulgarian TV channel BTV.
“There is one problem: we were brought here, we were put in a hotel for two days, now we are not told when we will be resettled from here. Either we have to go home, or… We don’t know what to do,” said a man named Anatoly.
One woman described the food as normal, but the living conditions as “uncomfortable”. “No lying down, no getting up, no sitting down – nothing,” she complained. Another Ukrainian woman complained that the beds in the trailers were very low and that children were nervous because of the lack of space. “It is very uncomfortable to sleep with a child, turning around that there – one on one ‘square’,” the refugee reported.
Another Ukrainian woman who arrived in Bulgaria said that things were “not normal”. “I don’t know, I’m just in shock, I don’t know what to do. There is no money for the return journey,” her neighbour stressed.
According to the TV report, the refugees want to be quickly accommodated at the recreation centre. At the same time, Gheorghe Chalcov, the head of the Yambol region, said that the refugees will stay here until housing facilities are identified. According to him, people can stay in the centre for up to 14 days.
