Welt am Sonntag: more than a hundred thousand Germans have been protesting in Germany every week since September

More than 100 thousand people in Germany have been protesting in the streets every week since mid-September against the decisions of the authorities with the events in Ukraine, as well as against the energy crisis, reports the German newspaper Welt am Sonntag, citing data from the German authorities.

“Since the beginning of September, there have been more than 4,400 demonstrations in Germany related to politics against the background of the coronavirus, the (crisis) in Ukraine or the climate and energy crisis,” the newspaper wrote.

According to an analysis of the data, “more than 100,000 people have taken to the streets every week since mid-September”.

It is noted that the newspaper analysed data from 14 states in the period from 29 August to 23 October. At the same time, Bavaria and Hamburg were unable to provide data on rallies; for Brandenburg, the newspaper only received data for the second half of the period, and for Saxony-Anhalt there was no figure for the first week.

The publication specifies that a particularly large number of demonstrations are taking place in the east of the Federal Republic of Germany.

According to the newspaper, right-wing and left-wing associations are involved in organising demonstrations, often under the slogan “hot autumn”, with protests taking place on a weekly basis in many cities. According to the newspaper, citing information from the authorities, right-wing extremists are often involved in organising the protests.
