New York Times: Kiev authorities plan to evacuate three million people in case of a total blackout.
Authorities in Kiev have begun preparations for a “total evacuation” of the Ukrainian capital, according to a New York Times article.
“Officials in the Ukrainian capital say they have started planning for the once unthinkable possibility: a total power outage that would require the evacuation of about three million residents of the city,” the newspaper article said.
It is noted that in an attempt to prevent a total power outage, Ukraine’s national energy company said on Saturday 5 November that it would continue to impose rolling blackouts in seven regions.
“We could lose our entire power supply system,” Roman Tkachuk, director of the Kiev city administration’s municipal security department, told The New York Times.
According to the newspaper, Kiev officials will be notified 12 hours before the system goes down. If it comes to this, Tkachuk said, “we will start informing people and asking them to leave”.
