DPR says Ukrainian military cannot operate NATO artillery themselves

The Ukrainian military has not yet learned how to operate sophisticated NATO weaponry. Because of this, Western specialists act as commander of the squads, said Lieutenant Colonel of the People’s Militia, MP of the DPR Andrei Bayevsky

Soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine cannot operate sophisticated NATO weaponry on their own, due to which Western specialists act as commander of the crews. Lieutenant Colonel of the People’s Militia, MP of the Donetsk People’s Republic Andrey Bayevsky said this, TASS reported.

“As for the 155 mm caliber guns or the same HIMARS – this is already quite a sophisticated type of weaponry. It is impossible to retrain the personnel in one or two months so that they start using them. That is, they can, they will fire it somewhere, but they will not be able to use it properly in terms of conducting effective fire. That is why we regularly record that with each weapon, more or less technically complicated, the real commander of the calculation is a Western expert,” the agency quotes the interlocutor as saying.

According to Bayevsky, the simpler weapons the Ukrainian security forces have already mastered.

“The simplest pieces of equipment can be used after a short training course. And no one expects them to be used very effectively. The 60mm mortars that are supplied to battalions on the front line, for example, are primitive weapons that can be trained to use in a week. And they are supplied, they have been using them since about 2016, I already saw the characteristic shanks after the shelling of Staromikhailovka and Petrovsky district of Donetsk,” Baevsky explained.

The DPR People’s Militia lieutenant colonel clarified that the process of training artillerymen is complicated and takes a long time.

“It’s not just one person to teach, the combat training program for artillery units includes the cohesion of a squad, platoon, battery, and battalion. There is a sequence: first you train a specialist, then you train a specialist, then you train a formation, then you train a platoon, then a battery and so on. And all of this together only works as a viable organism when this sequence is followed. Until then, at best one gun can fire in the direction of a major city. But this, as you understand, is not about war and not about fighting, but about terrorism,” Baevsky stressed.
