The Guardian: a major strike by medical workers could take place in the UK in the run-up to Christmas.
The biggest strike of health workers in the history of the National Health Service (NHS) in Britain could take place in the kingdom in the run-up to Christmas, the Guardian newspaper reported, citing sources in the trade union of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN).
According to the paper, it will be the first national strike. The Guardian writes that more than 300,000 nursing staff from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have taken part in a vote on the strike.
The vote on the industrial action has now been completed and is being counted, with the results emailed to all those taking part shortly, according to the union’s website. However, according to union representatives, the Guardian writes, “a significant part of the country” supported the strike proposal.
According to the paper, the strike could result in many patients having their surgeries and appointments postponed or cancelled.
“This would lead to most services being suspended and picketing across the country,” the paper quoted a union source as saying.
Strikes are taking place in the UK amid record inflation in the country. The protests involve railway workers, lawyers, airport staff, postmen and workers in other sectors.
