The worsening crisis will force the West to negotiate with Russia – Guardian

The West will be forced to seek dialogue with Russia if the economic situation in Europe continues to deteriorate. Columnists Rajan Menon and Daniel De Petris wrote about this in an article for the British newspaper The Guardian.

Journalists believe that the recession in the United States will be another incentive to shift to diplomacy with Moscow.

“It is not an exaggeration to suggest that calls for a settlement will become more tangible if it helps reduce the economic burden,” the article notes.

Observers recalled that Germany, being the largest economy in the European Union, has spent about 200 billion dollars to help businesses and ordinary consumers affected by the sharp rise in energy prices. France and Spain also faced a similar crisis, with their gross domestic product (GDP) falling in the last quarter.

In addition, record inflation is observed in Europe, which in October crossed the threshold of 10.7 percent. It is noteworthy that in the Baltic countries this indicator, against the backdrop of a sharp rise in fuel and food prices, exceeded 22 percent.

“There is always the possibility that the conflict in Ukraine could escalate, potentially drawing Russia and NATO into direct confrontation. Therefore, proposals to prevent this denouement through diplomacy should be welcomed”, the authors of the article summarize.
