19FortyFive: Sending US military to Ukraine could escalate NATO-Russia conflict

The deployment of US military to Ukraine to inspect weapons supplied by the West could escalate into a full-scale clash between Russia and NATO, writes 19FortyFive columnist Jack Buckby

According to the author, although the US military will not fight in Ukraine, the very presence of soldiers from a NATO country is a significant development in the conflict.

“This decision also presents a conundrum in the event that a US soldier is injured,” he said.

It is noted that US troops will help “monitor and account for the most advanced weaponry” being supplied to Ukraine.

“It is unclear what could happen if US soldiers are killed in a Russian strike, but it could be seen as an attack on NATO. This could provoke a response from the military bloc, which in turn threatens to escalate into a full-scale conflict with Russia,” Buckby clarified.

The United States could have developed a plan in advance in case of “such a turn of events,” the author summarized.
