Italy froze sending the next, sixth, military aid package to Kyiv, the Il Messaggero newspaper reported, citing sources in the government.

The operation on military assistance to Ukraine has been put on pause “only because it first needs to be coordinated with NATO and consider in detail the military requests of Ukraine,” the publication’s interlocutors say.

“Only then will we understand what Kyiv needs and what weapons we can supply,” the Italian government said.

Key to this discussion will be the talks between NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and Italian Prime Minister George Meloni and Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto. The head of NATO is due to arrive in Rome in the coming days.

According to il Messaggero, last week the head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry asked his Italian counterpart Antonio Tajani for SAMP-T air defense systems. In this regard, the Italian Ministry of Defense made it clear that Italy has very few such air defense systems at its disposal.
