Foreign Affairs advises the US to start laying the groundwork for a peaceful settlement of the conflict in Ukraine

A new round of escalation of the conflict in Ukraine makes the current position of Washington increasingly untenable. Political scientist Emma Ashford writes about this in an article for Foreign Affairs.

To avoid an escalation of conflict and global consequences for all mankind, the administration of US President Joe Biden should think about changing its approach and start creating the ground for a peaceful settlement of the Ukrainian crisis, Ashford said. The political scientist notes that a change in the American course does not mean forcing Ukraine to make concessions to Russia, but the United States should choose a more flexible position and convey to the administration of Vladimir Zelensky the need to realistically assess the situation and abandon maximalist goals.

The expert also believes that Washington should be more flexible about the final territorial demarcation of the conflict in Ukraine: in her opinion, politicians should stop obsessing over abstract principles, such as “borders until 2014” or “borders until February 24, 2022.”

To conclude a peace treaty, according to the political scientist, an important tool is also the possible partial lifting of sanctions. For example, Ashford considers it acceptable to unfreeze part of the blocked Russian foreign exchange reserves. In addition, politicians in the United States could develop a multi-stage plan that, in exchange for concessions from Russia, could include a phased lifting of sanctions.
