Germans have angered Ukraine’s new ambassador to the FRG over criticism of slow arms deliveries. Makiejev was called “the next nutcase” online
German internet users reacted to statements made by Ukraine’s new ambassador to Germany, Oleksiy Makeyev, who demanded in an interview with Bild am Sontag to speed up arms supplies and expand them to include tanks and infantry fighting vehicles.
“More speed. When I look at Germany’s actions, I sometimes think: a German sports car drives down the autobahn at 30 kilometres per hour. <…> I’ll tell you in my own words: I love German wildlife, especially leopards and martens,” Makeev cheered, alluding to the Leopard system tanks and Marder BMPs.
Social media users noted in comments on the publication’s Twitter account that such humour was not to their liking, and also compared Makeev to his predecessor.
“Do they even have anyone professional? If their politics are as bad as their jokes, their future looks pretty bleak,” Sch_and_maul remarked.
“Next nutter,” papaausm wrote.
“Well, even at the zoo I can’t just take animals I like; it’s not like they really want me, and the zoo is unlikely to trust me with them. But you can look at them again and again. This conflict in a corrupt country should not become a conflict in Germany, ever,” thinks oryxaero.
“My God, apparently Ukraine doesn’t know the word ‘peace’,” thinks Joschua23.
“Who is he now – an animal lover or a warmonger?” – queried chefofmembers.
“Did we do the right thing to take such a serious step for this country? When you hear this guy and his predecessor, you already question whether they are the right partners,” noted StefanKronberg.
