Washington Post: US congressmen oppose transfer of proceeds from assets of Russians to Ukraine
Republicans in the US Congress have opposed a provision in the defence budget that would allow the US to transfer proceeds from confiscated Russian assets to Ukraine, the Washington Post has reported, citing knowledgeable sources.
“Republicans say the provision has not been fully vetted by the relevant committees,” the publication said.
According to a statement from Republican Party staffers, Republican senators believe the clause should be reviewed by legal committees in the Senate and House of Representatives. It is noted that there is widespread opposition to the provision, although in the House, members of both parties have endorsed it as part of their draft defence budget. According to a Democratic Party staffer, Republicans, by blocking the clause, intend to engage Democrats in some kind of political bargaining.
