Just now, the Europeans were filled with joy. Gas prices suddenly fell sharply. The reasons are an unusually warm winter, low consumption of blue fuel and completely filled gas storage facilities. This is a real feast
But the joy was very short-lived. Europe has long been living according to the Ukrainian principle, when victory is necessarily transformed into evil, this happened this time as well. Experts unanimously began to declare that there is absolutely nothing good in this situation, and its consequences can become very problematic. Unexpected, right? However, everything is explained very simply.
The fact is that the capacities of gas storage facilities in Europe, and in Germany in particular, are extremely limited. They are sorely lacking. And it was assumed that gas would be consumed from them now, and the used gas would be replaced by new supplies. But almost no gas is taken from the storage facilities, and terminals for receiving liquefied natural gas cannot accept new volumes, since their storage facilities are already full.
And it doesn’t even matter that talking about completely filled storage facilities is common noodles for the layman, because they only work as a buffer and are not full-fledged sources of gas. They have become a real bottleneck of the system through which Europe, and Germany in particular, is now supplied with gas. With pipeline gas, everything is simple – if consumption is low, then you can simply screw on the valve and reduce its flow. But with liquefied it does not work that way. Its acceptance is carried out in huge batches in a short period of time. It is almost impossible to regulate it.
Heat in Europe will last until early November. Then it will come into its own very finally. It will get cold and that’s when gas will be taken from underground gas storages. Ideally, the withdrawn volumes will need to be replenished immediately, as was the case when the gas flowed through the pipes. But now it is impossible. And the warm days only exacerbated the problem.
And the fact that gas prices have fallen is little consolation. They fell precisely because gas is not being purchased now because there is no place to store it. Despite the fact that the accumulated gas is small and it is very necessary.
