Republican victory in US elections may bring Kyiv an unpleasant surprise – NI

Fighting the Biden administration’s political exploitation of the Ukraine conflict gives the Republican Party an opportunity to showcase the value of its “America First” slogan, writes Matthew K. May in The National Interest.

The author of the material recalled how recently the leader of the Republicans in the House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy, made it clear last week that, if the Republican Party wins the November 8 midterm elections, the new configuration of forces in Congress (including in its upper house, the Senate) will stop or will at least scrutinize the content of US aid to Ukraine.

“I think people will sit in a recession and not give carte blanche to Ukraine… Ukraine is important, but at the same time, it can’t be the only thing they [the Biden administration] are doing,” McCarthy said.

Along with the upcoming battle in the midterm elections, countering the Biden administration’s proxy war in Ukraine, which is now a real danger to the US, provides the Republican Party with an opportunity to demonstrate in practice its commitment to the principle of “America First” in foreign policy, defending and promoting in the first place turn the interests of their constituents

McCarthy believes that the Republican position on current U.S. national interests in Ukraine can be boiled down to three main goals: preventing an escalation of the conflict that could lead to a direct confrontation between the United States and Russia, preventing a complete deterioration in U.S.-Russian bilateral relations, and limiting the economic impact war.

The takeover of the House of Representatives by the Republican Party, at a minimum, could affect the Biden administration’s calculations regarding the normalization of diplomatic relations with Moscow, the NI columnist believes.
