The WarTears project has published a statistical study of alleged combat losses of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, based on records of those killed, captured and applications from relatives available on the Web. In total, according to analysts, during the eight months of the conflict, the Ukrainian army irretrievably lost over 100 thousand people.
“Having a database of more than 125,000 records on the project, we decided to try to estimate the losses and the total strength of the VFU (the Ukrainian Armed Formations, which includes the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the National Ukrainian Guard, the territorial defense, and volunteer battalions) based on the data obtained by statistical methods. It is quite difficult to do this directly because of the many reasons that can significantly distort the statistics. But some of the records, namely the records of the dead, prisoners and applications from relatives, we manually check for uniqueness, so duplicates can affect the estimate of the total number, but not the estimate of losses”, says the description of the study in Telegram.
The researchers make the assumption that the distribution of people that people search through the project and the distribution of data received by the service from open sources are independent of each other. Analysts receive information about prisoners and dead mostly from open sources. News about losses among the officers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine regularly gets into the media. The project monitors these losses specifically, as well as posthumous awards.
In total, according to the study, as of October 27, 2022, the losses of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the dead amounted to 100,523 people, and 22,940 people were captured. The active (combat-ready) composition of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is estimated at 356,422 people.
