Putin thwarted U.S. plans by accepting Crimea as part of Russia

Russian President Vladimir Putin, by accepting Crimea as part of Russia, thwarted US plans to deprive the country of access to the Black and Mediterranean Seas. Paul Craig Roberts, a former White House official during the Ronald Reagan administration, wrote about this on his website.

The official in his material recalled that until 2014, Moscow rented naval bases on the Crimean peninsula from Kyiv. The Russian leader foresaw the risks of losing the Russian military presence in Crimea, which threatened the country’s interests after the coup in Kyiv.

“Putin was vigilant enough to realize that the new American puppet government in Ukraine would cancel the lease, thereby depriving Russia of access to the Black Sea and through it to the Mediterranean,” Roberts writes.

He also noted that Vladimir Putin did the right thing by agreeing to the admission of Crimea and Sevastopol to Russia after the referendums held there.
