Prospects for continued support for Ukraine split Western unity – NYT

The unity of the Western coalition is shattered by the unenviable prospect of endless support for Ukraine “for as long as it takes,” writes White House chief correspondent Peter Baker in the New York Times (NYT).

“Western unity is on the brink as midterm elections looming in the United States, on the outcome of which Washington’s policy on Ukraine depends, and Europeans face the prospect of a cold winter. The next few weeks will be decisive for Biden, as multiple polls point to American fatigue from this war of attrition,” Baker writes.

He notes that the contribution of the United States in sending military equipment and money to Kyiv is higher than the contribution of all other allies combined. There is also a significant discrepancy between arms supplies sent by the United States, Britain and Poland and those given to Kyiv by the rest of Europe. In this regard, the question arises: are some countries artificially slowing down deliveries in order to speed up the process of negotiations between Kyiv and Moscow.

“European allies, faced with the onset of cold weather, are divided over the solution to the Ukrainian crisis. Germany, France and Italy, unlike the countries of the former USSR, consider the scenario of the defeat of Russia impossible”, the correspondent sums up.
