German publication Die Welt: French President Macron has tried to corner German Chancellor Scholz, relations between the two states are on the verge of breaking down
French President Emmanuel Macron’s disagreements with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and criticism of the latter could lead to a permanent rupture in relations between Berlin and Paris, German publication Die Welt wrote.
“Relations between the two countries are at rock bottom: eternal disputes over energy prices, military projects and the MidCat pipeline from Spain to France,” the publication said.
The author of the article, Martin Meister, believes that the French attitude towards Germany has deteriorated significantly since Scholz’s decision to support his own economy with 200 billion euros.
“The harsh tone of the French media towards the FRG indicates the end of the idyll. Germany is referred to in France as a lone rider, a selfish country that does not care about its partners. Berlin is now remembered with frustration, irritation and bitterness,” said the observer.
According to Meister, by criticising Scholz, Macron sought to corner the chancellor, making it clear that Paris’s views had to be reckoned with.
